Hoover, AL (October 17, 2024) – A significant traffic incident occurred Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 459, resulting in long delays for motorists traveling in the area. The Rocky Ridge Fire Department reported the accident took place at mile marker 16 near Hoover around 3 p.m.
According to the RRFD, the incident began when an 18-wheeler truck collided with several vehicles in the southbound lanes. The force of the collision caused the truck to roll, crossing the median and nearly crashing head-on with another 18-wheeler truck traveling in the opposite direction.
First responders quickly arrived at the scene, where they found one of the truck drivers trapped in the wreckage. Fortunately, emergency personnel were able to rescue the individual. The RRFD reported that at least four people sustained injuries, but none appeared to have life-threatening conditions.
In addition to the injuries, a gas tank ruptured during the collision, leading to a small diesel fuel spill. This added to the complexity of the situation as crews worked to manage the scene safely.
As a result of the crash, all lanes in both the northbound and southbound directions were closed for at least an hour. By 7:55 p.m., all southbound lanes had reopened, and the northbound lanes were cleared just before 8:30 p.m. However, roadways in the area remained congested as travelers attempted to navigate around the wreck location.
Our thoughts are with those affected by this incident as they recover from their injuries.
