Alexander County, NC (December 18, 2024) – A high-speed pursuit on US 64 escalated into a violent confrontation on Tuesday afternoon, culminating in a head-on collision with a tractor-trailer, injuries to two state troopers, and the hospitalization of the suspect, Herman Eugene Williams Jr., 41, of Statesville.
The incident began around 4 p.m. when troopers attempted to stop a speeding Jeep Liberty near the Iredell and Alexander County line. Williams fled, initiating a dangerous pursuit. Troopers employed precision immobilization techniques (PIT) during the chase, causing Williams to drive into a private driveway temporarily. However, he rammed patrol vehicles and re-entered the roadway. The pursuit continued until Williams crossed the center line and collided head-on with a tractor-trailer, followed by a secondary impact with another patrol vehicle.
Williams was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries. Two injured troopers were treated for minor injuries, while the tractor-trailer driver, Clayton Herman, was unharmed. Law enforcement reported that Williams was consuming alcohol during the chase, with impairment and speed identified as contributing factors. Charges against Williams are pending as authorities continue their investigation.
