Youngstown, NY (September 15, 2024) – A New York State Trooper was critically injured on Friday, September 13 while riding a police motorcycle on State Route 93 in Youngstown. The officer, Sergeant Station Commander Salvatore A. Mattina, a 10-year veteran of the force, was conducting a safety run for the Mercy Flight-Western New York Dice Run. Sgt. Mattina sustained multiple serious injuries, including fractures to his face, arm, pelvis, leg, and ankle.
He also suffered internal bleeding, organ damage, and a brain injury. He is currently undergoing several surgeries due to the severity of his injuries, and his condition remains critical. The accident occurred when a car exiting Niagara Scenic Parkway failed to yield, striking the police motorcycle. The driver of the car was treated for minor injuries, and no intoxication was detected.
The investigation is ongoing, with NYSP’s Collision Reconstruction Unit involved.
