York County, VA (October 16, 2024) – A Virginia State trooper was injured early Wednesday morning after his vehicle was sideswiped while he was stopped on the side of the road. The incident occurred around 3:15 a.m. on Interstate 64 at the 236-mile marker.
According to police reports, Trooper B. Nicholson had just completed a traffic stop and was parked on the closed shoulder of the interstate when he re-entered his 2021 marked Ford Explorer. At that moment, he was struck by a 2000 Ford Contour driven by 63-year-old Johnnie Ray Davis. The state vehicle was equipped with all necessary emergency equipment at the time of the accident.
Authorities confirmed that Davis was not impaired during the incident, and speed was not considered a contributing factor. However, he was charged with reckless driving at the scene. Trooper Nicholson sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Our thoughts are with Trooper Nicholson as he recovers from this incident.
