Yamhill County, OR (November 12, 2024) – A tragic two-car crash on Highway 18 near milepost 58 claimed the life of one individual and left another seriously injured on Saturday evening. The Oregon State Police (OSP) responded to the scene around 7:30 a.m. following reports of a head-on collision.
According to the preliminary investigation, an eastbound Acura CL, driven by 22-year-old Giovanni Zamora, lost control and veered to the right side of the roadway. Attempts to correct the vehicle’s trajectory caused it to enter the oncoming lane, where it was struck head-on by a Toyota Avalon operated by 21-year-old Mary Spiller.
Zamora succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Spiller sustained serious injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Her current condition has not been disclosed.
Traffic along Highway 18 was disrupted for approximately four hours as authorities conducted an extensive investigation. Speed has been identified as a significant contributing factor in the crash, according to OSP.
Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Giovanni Zamora and Mary Spiller during this difficult time.
Speed-Related Accidents in Oregon
Speeding remains one of the leading contributors to fatal crashes on Oregon’s roadways. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) has reported that speed-related accidents account for nearly 30% of all traffic fatalities in the state. In areas like Highway 18, where weather conditions and winding roads are common, excessive speed can lead to dangerous loss of control.
This recent tragedy underscores the importance of adhering to speed limits and driving cautiously, especially in areas prone to sudden changes in road conditions. Drivers are encouraged to be mindful of curves, visibility, and the potential for overcorrection when handling sudden obstacles.
Local authorities continue to stress the importance of defensive driving techniques to reduce the likelihood of collisions. Programs such as ODOT’s Safety Corridor Initiative aim to mitigate risks on high-incident routes like Highway 18 through increased signage, public awareness campaigns, and enhanced enforcement efforts.
