Woodward, IA (October 30, 2024) – A woman suffered severe injuries and was airlifted to MercyOne Hospital in Des Moines after a collision on Highway 169 Friday evening. The crash, reported shortly after 5 PM, caused significant delays as emergency crews worked to assist those involved and clear the scene.
According to Perry Fire Chief Grason Hill, the collision occurred as the woman was driving a pickup truck and preparing to turn onto 335th Street. An SUV traveling at a high rate of speed struck her vehicle from behind. Emergency responders extricated both the woman from her pickup and a man from the SUV.
The woman was airlifted due to the seriousness of her injuries, while two men in the SUV were treated for minor injuries at the scene. The crash prompted a temporary shutdown of Highway 169, backing up traffic for over an hour.
Authorities from the Perry Police Department, Perry Fire Department, and Dallas County Sheriff’s Office were on-site to assist. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
Our thoughts are with the injured woman and her family during this difficult time.
Rear-End Collisions on Iowa Highways
Rear-end collisions, like the one that occurred in Woodward, are a common and often preventable type of crash. These accidents frequently result from speeding, distracted driving, or failure to maintain a safe following distance. On highways such as Highway 169, higher speeds can significantly increase the risk of severe injuries when a collision occurs.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, rear-end collisions account for a large percentage of all roadway accidents. While many result in minor injuries, high-speed impacts often lead to serious consequences, including traumatic injuries requiring extensive medical intervention.
Drivers are urged to stay vigilant and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead, especially during the holiday season when roads are busier, and distractions are more prevalent. Simple practices like avoiding distractions, reducing speed, and remaining patient can help prevent these dangerous incidents.
