Woodstock, IL (October 28, 2024) – A tragic three-vehicle crash occurred on Davis Road, west of Dean Street, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and serious injuries to a juvenile passenger. The incident took place on October 27 at approximately 12:02 p.m., prompting a response from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, Woodstock Police Department, and Woodstock Fire Rescue District.
Preliminary reports indicate that a 2021 Dodge Challenger Hellcat was traveling westbound on Davis Road when it attempted to pass a 2021 Jeep Wrangler in a posted no-passing zone. At the top of a hillcrest, the Hellcat collided with an eastbound 2022 Volvo XC 90, causing the Volvo to exit the roadway to the south. The Hellcat continued westbound, rotated, exited the roadway to the north, and subsequently caught fire. The Jeep was struck by debris from the crash but managed to avoid direct impact from the other vehicles.
Tragically, the two occupants of the Hellcat died at the scene, and their identities have not yet been confirmed. The driver of the Volvo, a 47-year-old woman from Woodstock, also died at the scene, while a juvenile passenger was transported to Northwestern Medicine Woodstock Hospital by ambulance. The juvenile was later airlifted by LifeNet to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where they remain in serious condition. Fortunately, the driver and passenger of the Jeep were unharmed and did not require medical treatment.
Authorities believe that speed and reckless driving on the part of the Hellcat operator were contributing factors to this devastating crash. Alcoholic beverage containers were discovered at the scene, and it remains unclear whether they played a role in the incident. It is worth noting that the passengers in the Volvo were wearing seat belts, and airbags deployed as designed. The investigation is ongoing, led by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
