Woodbury, NY (November 14, 2024) – New York State Police are investigating a fatal collision that occurred Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 87 near milepost marker 50.9. The crash, reported around 12:30 p.m., involved a Nissan van and two Freightliner tractor-trailers.
According to authorities, the Nissan van was traveling northbound when it rear-ended a bobtail Freightliner tractor that had slowed in the right lane due to an upcoming work zone. The force of the impact pushed the bobtail tractor forward into the rear of a second Freightliner tractor-trailer.
The driver of the van was pronounced dead at the scene. Their identity is being withheld until family notifications are made. The driver of the bobtail tractor sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to St. Luke’s Hospital in Newburgh. The operator of the second Freightliner was uninjured.
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, with police examining the circumstances that led to the tragic incident.
