Wonder Lake, IL (December 30, 2024) – A tragic two-vehicle crash in McHenry County left one man dead and another injured. The collision occurred on December 27 at approximately 12:35 p.m. on Barnard Mill Rd, northwest of Summit Dr, prompting a swift response from the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office and multiple emergency services.
According to preliminary reports, a 2022 Chevrolet Silverado High Country was traveling northwest on Barnard Mill Rd when a 2008 Mazda 6, heading southeast, crossed the centerline for unknown reasons. The vehicles collided in an offset head-on crash in the northwest lane. Following the impact, the Mazda veered off the road and came to rest in a wooded area, while the Chevrolet remained on the roadway.
The driver of the Mazda, a 49-year-old man from Wonder Lake, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the Chevrolet, a 65-year-old man from Naples, Florida, was transported by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
Both drivers were reportedly wearing seat belts, and airbags deployed in each vehicle. The investigation remains ongoing and is being conducted by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Major Traffic Crash Investigation Unit and the McHenry County Coroner’s Office.
