Wolcott, CO (January 8, 2025) – A 22-year-old tow truck driver, Alex Salgado of Gypsum, sustained serious injuries after being struck by a Colorado State Patrol vehicle during a chain reaction crash involving multiple vehicles near Wolcott on Sunday evening. The incident occurred on I-70 and involved a series of collisions, leaving Salgado hospitalized with severe injuries, including a broken pelvis and leg fractures.

The crash began when a Ford F-250 struck a tow truck assisting a stranded vehicle stuck in the snow. Responding to that initial accident, Salgado, a tow truck operator for Big Steve’s Towing, arrived at the scene to provide additional support. Shortly after, a Jeep lost control, crashing into a parked state patrol car. The force of the impact pushed the patrol vehicle into Salgado, pinning him between the patrol car and his flatbed truck. Emergency responders from Wolcott quickly arrived to treat the injured and transport Salgado to a nearby hospital.

Fortunately, the state trooper involved in the incident was able to avoid physical harm. The driver of the Ford F-250 has been charged with driving under the influence (DUI). No charges have been announced against the Jeep driver at this time. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Our thoughts are with Alex Salgado and his loved ones during this difficult time.

Dangers Faced by Tow Truck Operators in Colorado

Tow truck operators play an essential role in keeping roads clear and safe, but they often work in hazardous conditions, particularly on busy highways like I-70. This incident underscores the risks these professionals face daily, especially during adverse weather conditions when roadways are more treacherous.

In Colorado, the “Move Over” law is designed to protect first responders, including tow truck drivers, by requiring motorists to slow down and move over when passing stopped emergency or maintenance vehicles with flashing lights. Unfortunately, not all drivers adhere to this law, leading to tragic incidents like the one involving Alex Salgado.

In 2022, Colorado recorded an alarming number of accidents involving tow truck operators and other roadside workers. These figures highlight the importance of driver awareness and the enforcement of traffic safety regulations to prevent similar accidents.

For drivers, it is crucial to remain vigilant, especially in poor weather conditions. Slowing down and maintaining a safe distance from roadside operations can save lives and prevent severe injuries.
