Winston-Salem, NC (January 16, 2025) – Two elderly pedestrians were injured after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Deacon Blvd. The Winston-Salem Police Department reported that the accident occurred as the pedestrians attempted to cross the eastbound lanes of the roadway.
Emergency responders, including Winston-Salem Fire and Rescue and paramedics, quickly arrived at the scene. Authorities identified the vehicle involved as a 2000 Jeep Wrangler, which was traveling east in the left lane when it struck the pedestrians.
An 83-year-old male pedestrian sustained critical life-threatening injuries and was transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment. A second pedestrian, a 78-year-old male, was also injured but only sustained minor injuries. The driver of the Jeep remained at the scene and cooperated fully with the investigation.
Following the accident, both eastbound and westbound lanes of Deacon Blvd were closed temporarily to facilitate the emergency response and the ongoing investigation. The roadways have since reopened. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading to the collision.
Our thoughts are with the injured pedestrians, and we hope for a full recovery.
Pedestrian Accidents in North Carolina
Pedestrian accidents are a significant safety concern across North Carolina, particularly in urban areas like Winston-Salem. According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), pedestrian collisions often occur at intersections or while individuals are crossing busy roadways. Contributing factors include poor visibility, driver inattention, and inadequate pedestrian crossings.
The risk of severe injuries or fatalities is particularly high for elderly pedestrians due to their increased vulnerability. Studies show that older adults are more likely to suffer critical injuries in traffic accidents compared to younger pedestrians.
Efforts to reduce pedestrian accidents include increasing public awareness about pedestrian safety, improving crosswalk designs, and enforcing traffic regulations to ensure both drivers and pedestrians exercise caution. Drivers are urged to remain vigilant, particularly in areas with high pedestrian activity, and pedestrians should use designated crosswalks whenever possible.
For individuals impacted by pedestrian accidents, seeking prompt medical attention and understanding one’s legal rights are critical steps toward recovery. Addressing the physical, emotional, and financial effects of such incidents is essential for moving forward.
