Wilmington, DE (October 30, 2024) – A multi-vehicle crash occurred on Tuesday morning, October 29, 2024, on Interstate 495 at the Christina River Bridge, resulting in injuries and significant traffic disruptions during rush hour.
According to Delaware State Police, the incident happened around 8:00 a.m. when a 45-year-old man from Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, was driving in the right lane of I-495 southbound at 12th Street. Attempting to overtake another vehicle, the driver made a dangerous maneuver by passing on the right using the 12th Street on-ramp. Unfortunately, he lost control of his vehicle and collided with the side of a tractor-trailer traveling in the center lane.
The impact caused the tractor-trailer to strike a small SUV that was traveling in the left lane. This collision sent the SUV over the median barrier wall and into oncoming northbound traffic, where it struck the side of a pickup truck. The force of the crash caused the pickup to flip onto its side and slide across the roadway.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find the driver of the SUV, a 38-year-old man from Elsmere, trapped in the wreckage. Wilmington firefighters worked quickly to extricate him, and he was treated at the scene by New Castle County paramedics before being transported to Wilmington Hospital in stable condition with a head injury.
The drivers of the pickup truck and the tractor-trailer, a 54-year-old man from Rock Hall, Maryland, and a 66-year-old man from Hatfield, Pennsylvania, respectively, were unharmed. The driver who initiated the chain reaction crash was also reported to be uninjured.
The accident scene spanned several hundred feet, leading to the complete closure of the northbound lanes for about two hours, while two of the three southbound lanes were also blocked. As of now, troopers have not issued any tickets related to the crash, and the investigation is ongoing.
Our thoughts are with the injured individual as they recover from this serious incident.
