Westbrook, CT (October 10, 2024) – A tragic wrong-way accident occurred on Interstate 95 South on Wednesday night, resulting in the death of a local man. At around 8 p.m., Connecticut State Police received reports of a crash in the vicinity of Exit 65.
According to preliminary investigations, Mark Palumbo Jr., a 47-year-old resident of Madison, was driving a 2014 Mustang GT southbound when he was struck by a 2017 Cadillac ATS that was traveling in the wrong direction on the highway. Unfortunately, Palumbo was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision.
The driver of the Cadillac, a 57-year-old man from Groton, sustained injuries that authorities believe to be minor. He was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital for medical evaluation and treatment.
Both vehicles involved in the crash were towed from the scene as emergency responders worked to clear the area. Traffic was diverted off the highway at Exit 66 while crews managed the situation. The highway was later reopened for normal traffic flow.
The Connecticut State Police C.A.R.S. Unit is currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic accident.
