West Palm Beach, FL (October 10, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on Tuesday, October 8, resulting in the death of a 33-year-old Wellington woman. Vanessa Renee Owens was involved in a collision with a truck at the intersection of Okeechobee Boulevard and North Jog Road, located northeast of the South Florida Fairgrounds.
According to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, the incident took place around 11:25 PM. Owens was driving eastbound on Okeechobee in a 2012 Buick Verano when she approached the intersection with Jog Road. A 2023 Volvo VNR, driven by a 61-year-old man from Port St. Lucie, was traveling northbound on Jog and entered the intersection under a green light. Investigators reported that Owens did not stop for the red light and turned onto Jog, resulting in her vehicle striking the passenger side of the Volvo.
The impact caused the Buick to rotate counterclockwise before coming to a stop north of the intersection, while the Volvo came to rest south of the intersection. Emergency responders from West Palm Beach Fire Rescue pronounced Owens dead at the scene.
The driver of the Volvo sustained no major injuries, according to the sheriff’s crash report. At this time, it is unclear whether he will face any charges related to the incident. The report indicated that there was no evidence of drugs or alcohol being involved in the crash. Additionally, it was noted that Owens did not appear to be wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
