Wayne Township, OH (January 18, 2025) – A two-vehicle crash in Wayne Township, just north of Waynesfield, left seven people injured late Friday night. The collision occurred at approximately 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of State Route 196 and Fairmount Rd.
Emergency responders, including crews from Wayne Township, Uniopolis, and Westminster, quickly arrived at the scene. According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP), the accident happened when the driver of a maroon Chevrolet Malibu traveling westbound on Fairmount Rd ran a stop sign. The Malibu collided with a white Toyota 4-Runner that was heading north on SR-196.
Medics transported seven individuals to Lima Memorial Hospital. Five passengers from the 4-Runner and two from the Malibu were treated for multiple injuries. While the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, the driver of the 4-Runner, who was not wearing a seatbelt, may have sustained the most serious injuries. Among the injured was a pregnant woman, adding concern for her and her unborn child’s health.
The ages of the victims, all from the Lima area, range from their twenties to mid-thirties. The intersection was closed for approximately two hours as authorities conducted an investigation and cleared the roadway. OSHP troopers have stated that alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash.
Our thoughts are with the injured individuals and their families during this challenging time. We wish them a speedy recovery.
Two-Vehicle Crashes in Ohio
Two-vehicle crashes at intersections are a common cause of injuries and fatalities on Ohio’s roadways. Intersections like SR-196 and Fairmount Rd are particularly prone to collisions, often due to traffic control violations, such as running stop signs or failing to yield.
Wayne Township and surrounding areas see regular traffic from both local residents and through travelers, making vigilance at intersections crucial. Statewide, the Ohio Department of Public Safety emphasizes adherence to traffic laws, especially at high-risk crossings, to reduce the likelihood of accidents.
Drivers are urged to always wear seatbelts, as this simple precaution significantly reduces the risk of serious injuries in a crash. In situations like this one, prompt medical attention and the coordinated efforts of multiple emergency response teams can make a critical difference in the outcome.
