Waukenabo Twp, MN (October 6, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred on October 4, 2024, at approximately 5:15 PM at the intersection of Highway 169 and Grove Street. The incident involved four vehicles and resulted in multiple injuries and fatalities.
According to preliminary reports, a 1993 GMC Suburban, driven by 61-year-old Roger John Walker from Minnetonka, was traveling eastbound on County Road 3 when it failed to stop at a stop sign for Highway 169. At the same time, a 2019 GMC Yukon, driven by 44-year-old Lisa Mae Melberg from Zimmerman, was traveling northbound on Highway 169 and collided with the Suburban. This collision caused severe damage to the Suburban and led to a chain reaction that impacted two additional vehicles—a 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee and a 2009 Dodge Ram—both of which were waiting at the intersection.
Emergency responders, including the Hill City Police Department and the Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office, arrived on the scene to provide assistance. The road conditions at the time were dry, which may have contributed to the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Sadly, the crash resulted in the fatalities of two passengers in the Suburban: 61-year-old Elizabeth Jane Baldwin and 92-year-old Marlo Dean Baldwin, both from Minnetonka. Roger John Walker sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment. The driver of the Yukon, Lisa Mae Melberg, also suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to HCMC. Several passengers in the Yukon, including 18-year-old Robert John Davidson and an 11-year-old female, sustained life-threatening injuries as well.
Our hearts go out to the families affected by this devastating accident.
