Wasilla, AK (February 17, 2025) – An elderly woman was found dead following a house fire near Wasilla on Saturday evening, according to Alaska State Troopers.
Authorities identified the victim as 80-year-old Mary Vanwaveren. The fire was first reported when a passerby alerted a state trooper on routine patrol in the Meadow Lakes area shortly before 5:45 p.m.
The trooper attempted to enter the burning home to rescue the occupant but was unable to do so due to intense smoke, extreme heat, and debris blocking access points. Emergency responders from the West Lakes Fire Department arrived and later discovered Vanwaveren’s body inside the home.
Officials have not yet determined the cause of the fire, and an investigation remains ongoing. Further updates may be provided as more information becomes available.
Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.
House Fires in Alaska
Residential fires remain a tragic concern in Alaska, particularly in colder months when heating sources, electrical malfunctions, or unattended fires can contribute to dangerous conditions. Fires in remote areas can be particularly devastating due to response time and limited access for emergency personnel.
The Alaska Division of Fire and Life Safety reports that home fires are among the leading causes of fire-related deaths in the state. Many of these incidents occur due to space heaters, unattended stoves, or faulty wiring. Fire safety experts emphasize the importance of working smoke detectors, fire escape plans, and regular heating system maintenance to reduce fire risks.
For families affected by house fires, the aftermath can be emotionally and financially overwhelming. Those who experience property loss or personal injury may benefit from seeking assistance through fire recovery programs and legal resources to navigate insurance claims and rebuilding efforts.
