Washington, MO (September 22, 2024) – A serious motor vehicle accident occurred on September 21, 2024, at approximately 10:10 p.m. on Missouri 47 near Coyote Cove. Emergency personnel responded to the scene following reports of a collision involving two vehicles.
Preliminary investigations indicate that a 2018 Dodge Grand Caravan, driven by 38-year-old Andrew G. Brown from Rolla, MO, was exiting a private parking lot and preparing to make a left turn onto northbound Missouri 47. At the same time, a 2011 Harley Davidson motorcycle, operated by 42-year-old John L. Hawley from Blackwell, MO, was traveling southbound on Missouri 47. According to reports, Brown failed to yield to Hawley, leading to a collision.
As Brown began to pull onto northbound Missouri 47, Hawley attempted to avoid the Dodge by swerving left. Unfortunately, this maneuver resulted in a collision, with the front of the motorcycle striking the front of the minivan. The impact was severe enough to eject both the driver and passenger of the motorcycle.
Emergency responders transported both John L. Hawley and his passenger, 38-year-old Crystal M. Hawley, to Mercy Hospital South for treatment of serious injuries. Reports indicate that neither occupant of the motorcycle was wearing safety devices at the time of the crash. The Dodge Grand Caravan was equipped with a seatbelt, which Brown was using.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing, with Trooper A. D. Pogue leading the inquiry, assisted by Troopers Z. L. Ricker and E. J. Raya.
