Warren County, IN (February 22, 2025) – A tragic collision in Warren County on February 20 resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries following a wrong-way crash on US 41, just south of County Road 850 North.

According to the Warren County Sheriff’s Office, 52-year-old Kelly Barnett of Alabama was driving a 2015 Fiat southbound in the northbound lanes of the divided highway when she collided head-on with a 1998 Chevrolet van. The van, driven by 48-year-old Sterling Zachery of Chicago, was traveling northbound at the time of impact.

Barnett did not survive and was pronounced dead at the scene. Emergency responders worked to extricate Zachery from his vehicle before he was airlifted to Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis with serious injuries.

Additionally, three adults and three children who were passengers in Zachery’s van sustained injuries and were transported to area hospitals, some by medical air transport. The extent of their injuries has not been disclosed.

The Indiana State Police is assisting with the investigation, and officials have stated that more details will be released as the case progresses.

The Dangers of Wrong-Way Crashes in Indiana

Wrong-way crashes, such as the one that occurred on US 41, are among the most dangerous types of accidents due to the high-impact forces involved. These collisions often lead to severe injuries or fatalities, as vehicles traveling in opposite directions collide head-on. According to Indiana traffic safety reports, wrong-way crashes, while less frequent, account for a disproportionate number of fatal incidents due to their nature.

Several factors can contribute to wrong-way accidents, including driver confusion, impaired driving, or poor visibility on roadways. While authorities have not indicated the specific cause of this crash, ongoing investigations aim to determine what led to the tragic event.

State and local officials continue to implement measures to prevent wrong-way crashes, including improved road signage, additional lighting, and enhanced driver education campaigns. Drivers are encouraged to stay vigilant, especially on highways, and report any wrong-way motorists to authorities immediately to prevent similar tragedies.

For those affected by severe car accidents, seeking medical attention, obtaining official reports, and consulting with professionals for guidance on legal and insurance matters can be crucial steps in recovery.
