Wakefield Township, MN (February 25, 2025) – A fatal head-on crash occurred on southbound Highway 23 near milepost 189 in Wakefield Township, Stearns County, on Monday evening.
The crash happened at approximately 5:04 p.m., involving a 2023 Volkswagen Tiguan and a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer. Authorities report that the Chevy was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of Hwy 23 when it collided head-on with the Volkswagen, which was traveling westbound.
Emergency responders, including the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, Cold Spring Police Department, Cold Spring Fire Department, and Mayo Ambulance, arrived at the scene. Both drivers, identified as 35-year-old Greg John Steil of Richmond, MN, and 52-year-old James Arthur Wilton of Fairchild, WI, sustained fatal injuries in the crash. Both drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. The involvement of alcohol remains unknown at this time.
