Volcano, HI (November 13, 2024) – A tragic head-on collision on Highway 11 near the 24-mile marker resulted in the deaths of a man and a woman from Volcano. The crash occurred at approximately 1:14 a.m. and is under investigation by Hawai‘i Island police.
Authorities report that a blue 2019 Jeep Renegade traveling southbound toward Ka‘ū crossed the center line, colliding head-on with a white 1996 Toyota Camry. The Camry’s driver, a 54-year-old man, and his 48-year-old female passenger were unresponsive at the scene and were later pronounced dead at Hilo Benioff Medical Center at 6:38 a.m. Autopsies have been ordered to determine the cause of death.
The driver of the Jeep, a 39-year-old woman from Kona, sustained injuries and was transported to Hilo Medical Center before being transferred to Queen’s Hospital on Oahu. She is reported to be in stable condition.
Police have indicated that inattention and drugs may have been factors in the crash. The identities of the deceased are being withheld pending notification of their families.
