Vero Beach, FL (December 11, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred Tuesday afternoon when a Brightline train traveling from Orlando to South Florida struck and killed a man at a railroad crossing in Vero Beach. The incident took place at approximately 3:00 PM, when the train, which had departed from Orlando at 1:50 PM, struck a pedestrian near the railroad’s intersection with 12th Street.
The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding the fatality. While it has not yet been confirmed whether the incident was an accident or a suicide, detectives are working to gather more information. According to Sheriff Eric Flowers, the train’s horn sounded just before the brakes were applied, and the train came to a stop.
Passengers aboard the Brightline train were informed that there had been an “interaction” at the crossing, and they were told the train would remain stopped until authorities arrived. Despite the collision, passengers did not report feeling any impact.
The train remained at the scene for nearly two hours as authorities worked to clear the area. As a result, other northbound and southbound Brightline trains experienced delays.
