Vernon County, WI (February 11, 2025) – A woman was seriously injured in a head-on collision Monday morning when a vehicle attempted to pass others near a knoll on Pierce Hill Rd in Vernon County. The crash occurred around 7:15 a.m., according to authorities.
Robert Brand, 21, of Hillsboro, was driving west in a pickup truck when he tried to pass two vehicles while approaching a hill, Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson reported. At the same time, Kimberly Johnson, 55, of Viroqua, was driving east and came over the knoll. Unable to avoid the oncoming truck, Johnson’s vehicle collided nearly head-on with Brand’s pickup. Both vehicles came to rest in the front yard of a nearby residence.
Johnson, who was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash, sustained serious injuries and had to be extricated from her vehicle by the Viroqua Fire Department. She was then airlifted by Gundersen Air to Emplify/Gundersen Health System in La Crosse for advanced medical treatment. No information was provided regarding injuries to Brand.
The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances of the crash, including whether unsafe passing contributed to the collision. Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
Our thoughts are with Kimberly Johnson and her loved ones during this difficult time, and we hope for her full recovery.
Head-On Collisions and Dangerous Passing in Wisconsin
Head-on collisions, such as the one on Pierce Hill Rd in Vernon County, are among the most severe types of traffic accidents. These crashes often result in serious injuries due to the combined force of both vehicles traveling towards each other. In rural areas of Wisconsin, narrow roads and hilly terrain can make passing maneuvers particularly risky, as visibility is often limited, and oncoming vehicles may not be visible until it is too late.
In this case, the attempt to pass two vehicles near a knoll significantly increased the risk of a collision. Wisconsin law requires drivers to ensure that the road ahead is clear and that it is safe to pass before executing such maneuvers. Failing to do so can lead to devastating outcomes, as seen in this incident.
Serious injuries from head-on crashes, like those sustained by Kimberly Johnson, often require extensive medical treatment and long-term rehabilitation. Victims may face physical, emotional, and financial challenges as they recover from their injuries. Those involved in such accidents need to seek immediate medical attention and consider consulting with legal professionals to understand their rights and options for compensation.
For drivers in Wisconsin, this tragic event serves as a reminder to exercise caution, particularly when attempting to pass on rural roads or in areas with limited visibility. Patience and adherence to traffic laws can prevent unnecessary accidents and save lives.
