Van Buren, AR (November 19, 2024) – A tragic head-on collision on State Highway 59 in Crawford County claimed one life and left another person injured on Sunday afternoon. The accident occurred at approximately 3:45 p.m. during rainy weather conditions.
According to the Arkansas State Police, the crash involved a 2021 Ford Explorer traveling northbound and a 2003 Kia Sorento heading southbound. The southbound Kia Sorento reportedly crossed into the northbound lanes, resulting in a head-on collision with the Ford Explorer.
The driver of the Ford Explorer, 85-year-old Donald Lee Schultz of Van Buren, was pronounced deceased at the scene. His body was transported to Edwards Funeral Home in Fort Smith. The driver of the Kia Sorento, 53-year-old Shawn T. Jones of Fort Smith, sustained injuries and was transported to Mercy Hospital Fort Smith for treatment.
Rainy weather and wet road conditions at the time of the crash may have contributed to the accident, but the incident remains under investigation by the Arkansas State Police. The next of kin for the deceased has been notified.
