Union County, OH (March 1, 2025) – One person was killed, and another was seriously injured following a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of State Route 347 and Lunda Road in Union County on Friday afternoon.
According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP), the crash occurred around 4:30 p.m. when a Honda HRV driven by 55-year-old Michael Lee Shroat of Ostrander was traveling eastbound on SR-347. At the same time, a Mazda CX7 driven by 39-year-old Matthew W. Kauser of Marysville was heading southbound on Lunda Road.

The Mazda struck the driver-side door of the Honda, forcing it off the south edge of SR-347, where it crashed into a tree. Meanwhile, the Mazda veered off the east edge of Lunda Road before coming to a stop.
Tragically, Shroat was pronounced dead at the scene by the Union County Coroner. Kauser sustained serious injuries and was transported to Union County Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Authorities have not yet determined whether impairment or other factors played a role in the collision. The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

Deadly Intersection Accidents in Ohio
Intersection-related crashes are a leading cause of fatal and severe injury collisions across Ohio. Many of these crashes, like the one at SR-347 and Lunda Road, result from drivers failing to yield, ignoring stop signs, or misjudging the speed of cross traffic. Such accidents can have devastating consequences, leaving families mourning the loss of loved ones and victims struggling to recover from serious injuries.
Ohio law requires all motorists to obey traffic signals and stop signs to prevent avoidable tragedies. When drivers fail to stop or yield properly, they not only put themselves at risk but also endanger the lives of others. Law enforcement agencies emphasize the importance of defensive driving and heightened awareness at intersections, especially in high-speed rural areas.
Victims and families affected by serious crashes often face emotional distress and financial hardships, including medical expenses, funeral costs, and lost income. In cases involving negligence, legal options may be available to seek justice and compensation for damages.
If you or a loved one has been involved in a severe crash, consulting with a legal professional can help you understand your rights and options.
