Twin Falls, ID (October 28, 2024) – A significant accident occurred on Interstate 84 on October 27, resulting in the closure of all eastbound and westbound lanes for several hours. The incident took place around 1:58 p.m. when a semi-truck experienced a tire failure while traveling westbound near milepost 170, according to the Idaho State Police.
The tire failure caused the semi-truck to crash into the center barrier of the freeway. The impact pushed the barrier into the eastbound lanes, where it struck two vehicles, a Chevy Tahoe and a Chevy Equinox, traveling in the opposite direction. Following this, the semi-truck flipped onto its side and caught fire. Remarkably, the driver managed to escape from the burning truck.
Firefighters from the Jerome Rural Fire District responded promptly, extinguishing the fire within approximately 30 minutes. While multiple individuals sustained injuries, authorities confirmed that there were no fatalities resulting from the crash. Several occupants of the Chevy Tahoe were transported to a local hospital for treatment, while the occupants of the Chevy Equinox were unharmed. The driver of the semi-truck was airlifted to a hospital for medical attention.
The accident caused significant traffic disruptions, with all eastbound lanes of Interstate 84 blocked for about five hours and westbound lanes closed for twelve hours. Officers diverted eastbound traffic onto Golf Course Road and westbound traffic onto North U.S. Highway 93 and Idaho Route 25.
The Idaho State Police are currently investigating the incident to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash.
Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this accident, and we hope for a swift recovery for those injured.
