Tumwater, WA (November 15, 2024) – A 33-year-old Olympia man was killed in a tragic collision late Thursday night after a reckless driver fled a traffic stop, ran a red light, and struck the victim’s vehicle. The crash occurred just after 10 p.m. when the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) attempted to stop a Dodge Charger driven recklessly on Yelm Highway Southeast.
The driver of the Charger was reportedly traveling at 62 mph in a 35 mph zone, prompting the deputy to initiate the traffic stop. However, the driver fled the scene at a high rate of speed, and the deputy lost sight of the vehicle. Shortly thereafter, the driver, still speeding through Tumwater, ran a red light at Capitol Boulevard Southeast and crashed into 33-year-old Dane Nielsen’s Ford Focus on Tumwater Boulevard Southeast.
Emergency responders arrived quickly and attempted lifesaving measures on Nielsen, but he was tragically declared dead at the scene. The driver of the Charger, a 30-year-old man from Winlock, was apprehended shortly after the crash. He was transported to St. Peter’s Hospital in Olympia for treatment of minor injuries before being booked into Thurston County Jail on charges of vehicular homicide and eluding a police vehicle, both felonies.
We would like to extend our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased victim.
