Tulsa County, OK (November 20, 2024) – The Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) is investigating a tragic fatal crash that occurred Monday evening on State Highway 11 in Tulsa County. The accident claimed the life of Alex C. Hillyard, a 39-year-old resident of Skiatook.
According to OHP, the crash happened as Hillyard was driving a 1996 Chevrolet pickup southbound on State Highway 11. While attempting to pass a 2014 Toyota Tundra driven by Javier A. Carrillo-Cueto, 44, of Tulsa, Hillyard reportedly lost control of his vehicle on a wet roadway while navigating a curve.
The Chevrolet veered off the road to the left, striking a culvert and a sign. It then re-entered the highway but veered off again to the right, colliding with a pipe fence before coming to rest on its wheels. Emergency crews, including the Skiatook Fire Department, worked for nearly two hours to free Hillyard from the wreckage. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Carrillo-Cueto was uninjured in the crash. OHP reported that Hillyard was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident, though the vehicle was equipped with them. An ongoing investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of the crash and Hillyard’s condition before the incident.
We offer our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased victim.
Fatal Crashes on Oklahoma Hwys
Highway accidents like the one on State Highway 11 serve as stark reminders of the dangers drivers face, particularly in adverse weather conditions. Wet roads and sharp curves can dramatically increase the likelihood of losing control, especially when drivers attempt high-risk maneuvers such as passing. Tragically, the absence of seatbelt use in accidents often leads to more severe outcomes.
State Highway 11, like many Oklahoma highways, poses challenges due to its curves and variable road conditions. Authorities and safety advocates continuously urge drivers to exercise caution, particularly in hazardous conditions, by reducing speed and ensuring seatbelt use to mitigate risks.
Families affected by fatal accidents often face immense grief alongside practical challenges, including navigating insurance claims, arranging funeral services, and understanding their legal options. Investigative efforts by agencies such as OHP play a crucial role in providing answers and accountability in the wake of these tragedies.
If you or someone you love has been involved in a fatal collision, seeking professional guidance can help ensure justice and provide support during a challenging time.
Local Accident Reports extends heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Alex C. Hillyard. We encourage all drivers to prioritize safety by remaining cautious in adverse conditions and wearing seatbelts at all times. Together, we can work to reduce fatalities on Oklahoma’s roads.
