Tukwila, WA (March 8, 2025) – A fatal crash occurred on the SR 599/Interurban overpass in Tukwila Friday morning. Emergency responders from Puget Sound Fire, King County Medic One, and WSP troopers quickly arrived at the scene after a Toyota Highlander collided with the overpass wall, causing it to plummet onto northbound I-5. The driver of the SUV, who fled the scene, is expected to be booked for felony hit and run once medically cleared. One passenger was killed in the crash, and another sustained life-threatening injuries.
The crash also involved three other vehicles on I-5 when the SUV fell onto the freeway. Fortunately, no one in those vehicles sustained serious injuries. The left lanes of northbound I-5 were closed, causing a traffic backup of nearly six miles. By 12:52 p.m., all lanes had reopened.
The Washington State Patrol is working to determine whether speed or other factors contributed to the incident. Investigators have not ruled out the possibility of speeding as the cause of the crash.
