Tucson, AZ (January 4, 2025) – A tragic accident claimed the life of an 11-year-old girl in Pima County on Friday afternoon. The collision occurred around 1:30 PM near the intersection of West Corte de Maizal and South Avenida De Raspa, just west of Tucson, according to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department (PCSD).
Deputies from the San Xavier District Office arrived at the scene to find the young girl fatally struck by a truck while riding a scooter in the roadway. Authorities confirmed the child was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. Despite the driver of the truck remaining at the scene and cooperating fully with investigators, the girl was pronounced dead on-site.
PCSD reported that neither speed nor impairment appears to have played a role in the incident. An investigation remains ongoing to determine the full circumstances surrounding the collision.
Our hearts go out to the family and community mourning this unimaginable loss.
Scooter Safety and Child Accidents in Arizona
Child safety while using recreational vehicles like scooters is a critical concern. Arizona laws do not universally require helmets for non-motorized scooter riders, but safety experts strongly encourage their use, especially for children. Helmets significantly reduce the risk of severe head injuries in accidents, as illustrated by numerous studies.
Parents and caregivers can enhance safety by teaching children proper riding practices, ensuring they stay on sidewalks or designated paths, and supervising them near busy roadways. Drivers, too, bear responsibility by maintaining vigilance in residential areas and obeying speed limits.
In devastating cases like this, families are left grappling with profound grief and unanswered questions. Accessing resources for emotional support, understanding legal rights, and navigating the aftermath can help ease the burden during such challenging times.
