Topeka, KS (October 7, 2024) – A tragic house fire in central Topeka led to the discovery of one deceased individual on Sunday evening. Crews from the Topeka Fire Department (TFD) responded to reports of the fire at 1640 SW Buchanan Street shortly before 6 p.m.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames emanating from the two-story residence. Firefighters quickly initiated a search of the premises and discovered an individual on the second floor who was later pronounced dead at the scene.
The fire was extinguished, and crews managed to contain it to the house where it originated, preventing further damage to neighboring properties. Emergency Medical Services (AMR), Evergy, the Kansas Gas Service, the Kansas State Fire Marshal, and the Topeka Police Department also responded to the incident.
Fire crews and a TFD investigator remain on-site as the investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
