Tampa, FL (January 27, 2025) – A deadly chain of events in South Tampa late Sunday night resulted in the death of a pedestrian, injuries to three civilians, and multiple Tampa police officers being hurt during a pursuit on Interstate 275. The suspect at the center of the incident was also killed, following an officer-involved shooting.
According to Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw, the violent series of events began at approximately 8:30 p.m. at a Dollar General store on South Dale Mabry Highway at Interbay Blvd. A verbal altercation between the suspect, a 47-year-old man, and another individual escalated after the suspect used his white Honda to block the other person’s vehicle. Following the argument, the suspect pursued the victim to a friend’s home near West Meadow St and South MacDill Ave, where he struck the victim with his car. The victim’s friend fired a gun at the suspect in an attempt to stop him.
After fleeing the scene, the suspect drove northbound and began intentionally targeting pedestrians. He struck a male pedestrian near MacDill Ave and Interbay Blvd, leaving the man in critical condition with head injuries. Shortly thereafter, another male pedestrian was hit in the 5800 block of Interbay Blvd. Tragically, this victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The violence continued as the suspect struck yet another man at West Shore Blvd and Lemon St. This victim was transported to the hospital for evaluation and was reportedly conscious and alert.
Police located the suspect and initiated a pursuit, which ended on I-275 northbound near the Howard Ave/Armenia Ave exit. Officers executed a PIT maneuver to stop the suspect’s vehicle. As the suspect exited the car and reportedly reached for something, officers discharged their weapons, fatally shooting him.
Three Tampa police officers were injured during the incident and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is now leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting, as per protocol.
The northbound lanes of I-275 were closed for several hours but reopened shortly before 6:00 a.m. Monday. The names of those involved have not yet been released as authorities work to notify families.
Chief Bercaw expressed his condolences, saying, “Our thoughts are with the families of all those impacted by this tragic series of events. This individual, who already had a violent history, displayed a blatant disregard for human life, resulting in this devastating outcome.”
Pedestrian Accidents in Florida
Pedestrian accidents, like those seen in this tragic series of events, remain a significant concern in Florida. The state consistently ranks among the highest in the nation for pedestrian-related fatalities and injuries. Incidents involving intentional harm, however, highlight the alarming dangers posed by reckless or violent driving behaviors.
Florida law mandates that drivers exercise care and avoid endangering others on the road. Pedestrians, meanwhile, are encouraged to use designated crosswalks and remain vigilant to minimize risk. However, no amount of precaution can fully protect against intentional acts like those reported in Tampa.
For families impacted by pedestrian accidents, seeking legal advice and support is crucial to understanding their rights and obtaining justice. Navigating the aftermath of such a traumatic event requires access to resources that can aid in physical, emotional, and financial recovery.
