Tampa, FL (March 10, 2025) – A 72-year-old bicyclist was killed Saturday night in a collision with a scooter on Dale Mabry Hwy, according to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
The crash occurred around 7:38 p.m. when a 41-year-old man on a scooter was traveling south in the right-turn lane of the highway. The bicyclist was riding in the same direction, positioned along the marker between the right-turn lane and the outside travel lane.
Authorities say that north of Hudson Ln, the scooter driver merged into the outside lane and collided with the bicyclist. The impact caused fatal injuries to the cyclist, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The scooter driver was uninjured in the crash.
The Florida Highway Patrol continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.
Bicycle Accidents in Florida
Florida consistently ranks among the most dangerous states for bicyclists due to high traffic volume, urban congestion, and limited designated bike lanes in some areas. Highways like Dale Mabry pose significant risks for cyclists due to high-speed vehicle traffic and merging lanes.
Collisions between bicycles and motorized vehicles—such as scooters, motorcycles, or cars—often result in severe or fatal injuries for cyclists, who have little protection. Many accidents occur due to lane changes, driver inattention, or failure to yield.
Families of bicycle accident victims may be eligible to seek compensation through wrongful death claims. This can help cover medical expenses, funeral costs, and other financial burdens resulting from a tragic loss. Understanding legal options can help ensure justice for victims and their families.
To improve road safety, cyclists should use designated bike lanes whenever possible, and all road users should remain aware of their surroundings, especially in high-traffic areas. If you or a loved one has been affected by a bicycle accident, seeking legal guidance can help ensure your rights are protected.
