Tallevast, FL (February 28, 2025) – A bicyclist suffered critical injuries in a hit-and-run crash on U.S. 41 Thursday afternoon, marking one of three collisions caused by the same driver.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 78-year-old John Figgie of Chesterfield, Massachusetts, was driving north on U.S. 41 near Seagate Drive when he veered into the bicycle lane and struck a 78-year-old cyclist at approximately 3:09 p.m. Figgie then fled the scene, continuing northbound before rear-ending a van about half a mile later, where his vehicle became disabled.
Authorities confirmed that Figgie had already been involved in another hit-and-run incident earlier in Sarasota County before striking the bicyclist. After causing three separate crashes, he was arrested and booked into the Sarasota County Jail on charges of leaving the scene of a serious injury crash and a moving violation.
The injured bicyclist was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
Our thoughts are with the victim, and we hope for a full and speedy recovery.
