Tallahassee, FL (March 8, 2025) – A multi-vehicle crash occurred on Interstate 10 near mile marker 205 on Friday afternoon after drivers swerved to avoid a motorcyclist who had fallen off his bike.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the crash happened at approximately 3:08 p.m. when a 52-year-old motorcyclist from Mississippi lost control while traveling eastbound in the left inside lane. The rider was thrown from his bike, landing in the median.
In an attempt to avoid the fallen motorcyclist, the driver of a pickup truck came to a sudden stop. Another pickup truck behind it slowed down, but the driver of an SUV failed to react in time and crashed into the second pickup, which was then pushed into the first truck.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene within 15 minutes, and traffic remained blocked in both directions until tow trucks arrived at approximately 4:40 p.m. By 5:20 p.m., eastbound lanes had reopened.
Initially, FHP reported that the motorcyclist may have been run over and critically injured. However, further reports confirmed that he had been thrown from his bike and that his condition was serious but non-life-threatening. There were no other injuries reported among the drivers of the involved vehicles.
Dangers of Sudden Stops on Highways
Multi-vehicle crashes on high-speed highways like I-10 often occur when drivers must react quickly to unexpected obstacles. Sudden stops, lane changes, and poor visibility can all contribute to secondary collisions.
To reduce the risk of highway pileups, drivers should:
- Keep a safe following distance to allow reaction time in emergencies
- Remain alert for sudden traffic slowdowns or stopped vehicles
- Avoid distractions while driving, particularly on highways
- Reduce speed when approaching accident scenes or heavy congestion
