Tacoma, WA (February 24, 2025) – Several people, including officers and civilians, were injured Saturday morning following a multi-vehicle crash on 176th Street that stemmed from a police pursuit.
The incident began around 10:36 a.m. when a man at a shopping center near DJ Nails on Pacific Avenue reported being carjacked at gunpoint by four suspects. The suspects, driving a stolen black sedan, fled north on Pacific, prompting Pierce County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) deputies to pursue them.
During the chase, an officer used a PIT maneuver to bring the fleeing vehicle to a stop. The driver and one passenger attempted to flee on foot but were quickly arrested. Two backseat passengers, who cooperated with law enforcement, were also taken into custody.
Authorities confirmed that four PCSO officers involved in the pursuit sustained injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Additionally, two civilian vehicles were struck during the chase, resulting in minor injuries to those inside.
Investigators continue to review the circumstances of the pursuit and crash. Further details may be released as the case develops.
Our thoughts go to the victims as we hope for their recovery.
Risks of Police Pursuits and Public Safety
High-speed police chases, while sometimes necessary to apprehend suspects, pose serious risks to officers, suspects, and the public. Collisions during pursuits can result in injuries, property damage, and, in some cases, fatalities. Law enforcement agencies must carefully balance the need for apprehension with public safety considerations.
Motorists should remain vigilant when encountering active police chases and pull over safely if instructed by law enforcement. Civilians injured in accidents caused by pursuits may face unexpected medical expenses and vehicle damage, making it essential to understand legal options for recovery.
For those affected by pursuit-related crashes, seeking medical care and legal guidance is an important step in ensuring fair compensation and recovery.
