Sun Lakes, AZ (October 17, 2024) – A deadly chain-reaction crash occurred on Interstate 10 Wednesday afternoon, leading to the shutdown of the busy freeway for several hours. According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS), the incident took place around noon, approximately two miles south of Riggs Road, near the community of Sun Lakes.
Reports indicate that traffic was slowing on the freeway when a box truck driver failed to slow down in time, resulting in a rear-end collision with a pickup truck and three other vehicles. The force of the impact pushed both the box truck and the pickup into the median, where they caught fire.
Tragically, the drivers of both the pickup truck and the box truck were pronounced dead at the scene. Fortunately, there were no passengers in either vehicle. The drivers of the two other vehicles struck by the box truck sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to local hospitals for treatment. A semi-truck was also involved in the collision but, according to DPS, that driver was not injured.
Emergency responders, including firefighters, worked diligently to extinguish the flames and smoke emanating from the burning vehicles. Arizona’s Family news chopper captured dramatic footage of the scene, showing firefighters battling the fire while assessing the damage to a sedan and an SUV that were also impacted by the crash.
Traffic officials reported that the freeway was closed in both directions between Riggs and Casa Blanca roads as crews worked to clear the wreckage. The eastbound lanes reopened around 5 p.m., while the westbound lanes followed suit at approximately 6:15 p.m.
An ADOT freeway camera positioned on Queen Creek Road captured faint smoke in the distance, indicating the aftermath of the fire. The investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing as authorities work to gather more details about the circumstances leading up to this tragic incident.
Our thoughts are with the families and friends of the victims during this incredibly difficult time.
Vehicle Collisions in Arizona
Vehicle collisions are a significant concern in Arizona, where the state sees a high volume of traffic and, unfortunately, a considerable number of accidents. According to the Arizona Department of Transportation, thousands of accidents occur annually, often resulting in serious injuries and fatalities.
In incidents like the one on I-10, the risks increase significantly when multiple vehicles are involved. The impact of a large vehicle, such as a box truck, can lead to devastating consequences for smaller vehicles and their occupants. Factors contributing to these accidents can include distracted driving, speeding, and failure to maintain a safe following distance.
If you or someone you love has been involved in a vehicle accident in Arizona, it is crucial to understand your rights and options. Victims of such accidents may face extensive medical treatment, rehabilitation, and emotional challenges as they navigate the aftermath of their injuries. Arizona law allows individuals to pursue compensation for damages, including medical expenses, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
