Sumter County, SC (December 6, 2024) – A tragic accident claimed the life of a 42-year-old man early Wednesday morning when he was struck by a pickup truck while walking on Black River Rd in Sumter County. The South Carolina Highway Patrol reports that the collision occurred at approximately 12:40 AM in an unlit area near the intersection of Rice Dr.
James Rayan Weikel, a Kershaw County resident, was walking south on Black River Rd wearing dark clothing when he was hit by a 2012 Suzuki pickup truck traveling southbound. Master Trooper Gary Miller of the South Carolina Highway Patrol confirmed that Weikel died at the scene from the injuries he sustained in the crash.
The driver of the pickup truck, who was uninjured, remained at the scene following the collision. No other injuries were reported. The South Carolina Highway Patrol continues to investigate the cause of the crash.
