Summerville, SC (January 20, 2025) – A tragic crash on US 17A early Monday morning claimed the lives of two women. The South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) is investigating the double fatality collision that occurred approximately two miles north of Summerville at around 3:36 AM.

According to Corporal Nick Pye of SCHP, a 2013 Buick Enclave traveling north in the southbound lane of US 17 struck a 2018 Volkswagen head-on. A 2016 GMC, also traveling south, then collided with the Volkswagen from the rear.

Brianna Barnum, 28, of St. Stephen, was the sole occupant of the Volkswagen. She was pronounced dead at the scene due to fatal injuries. Miriam Frausto, 36, of North Charleston, was the sole occupant of the Buick. She was transported to a local hospital but succumbed to her injuries shortly after. The driver of the GMC was not injured.

The Berkeley County Coroner’s Office was notified around 4:34 AM and has confirmed the identities of the deceased. Berkeley County EMS, the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office, Pine Ridge Fire & Rescue, and SCHP responded to the scene.

We send our condolences to the victims’ families and loved ones in this difficult time.

The Dangers of Wrong-Way Driving

Wrong-way driving, as seen in this tragic incident, is one of the most dangerous types of roadway accidents, often leading to catastrophic outcomes. Collisions caused by vehicles traveling against traffic typically result in head-on crashes, which are more likely to cause severe injuries or fatalities due to the high speeds involved.

According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, wrong-way crashes are often linked to driver impairment, distraction, or confusion about roadways. Urban and suburban routes like US 17 are particularly susceptible due to high traffic volumes and complex road designs.

To prevent wrong-way crashes, drivers should always stay alert, adhere to traffic signs, and avoid distractions. For communities, enhancing road signage, installing reflective markers, and adding physical barriers can help mitigate the risk of such incidents.

The families of the victims of crashes like this often face overwhelming emotional and financial burdens, including funeral costs, medical expenses, and loss of income. Seeking legal support and leveraging available resources can help them navigate this challenging time.
