Stuart, FL (February 18, 2025) – A mother and her 3-year-old child were forced into a canal after a semi-truck driver struck their vehicle and left the scene on Monday morning.
According to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred on Kanner Highway when 69-year-old Alton Winters, the driver of a tractor-trailer, made an improper lane change and collided with the mother’s car. The impact caused her vehicle to veer off the roadway and into a body of water.
Despite slowing down briefly, Winters did not stop to assist, reportedly telling authorities that he “had to make a delivery.” The mother managed to free both herself and her toddler from the sinking vehicle and made it to the bank, where emergency responders later assisted them.
Authorities located Winters at a nearby produce company, where Stuart police arrested him on charges of leaving the scene of a crash with injuries and improper lane change. The mother and child were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.
Our thoughts are with the victims, and we wish them a full recovery.

Incidents like this highlight the importance of responsible driving, especially for commercial drivers. Improper lane changes, distracted driving, and failure to stop at accident scenes can have devastating consequences for victims.
Those injured in truck-related accidents may face medical expenses, emotional trauma, and long recovery periods. Understanding legal rights is crucial when seeking compensation for injuries and damages caused by negligent drivers.
