Staten Island, NY (October 31, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred Wednesday night when a pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle on Hylan Boulevard in New Dorp. Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene just before 10:30 p.m. after reports of a pedestrian being hit in the vicinity of Hylan Boulevard and New Dorp Lane.
According to preliminary investigations by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad, the victim, 44-year-old Denise Owens from New Dorp Beach, was walking against traffic in the left lane of the Tottenville-bound Hylan Boulevard. She was struck by a 2012 Nissan Maxima that was traveling in the same direction. The Nissan had a green light as it passed through the intersection of New Dorp Lane, colliding with Owens, who was reportedly a few feet outside of the crosswalk.
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) arrived promptly and transported Owens to Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze, where she was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The driver of the Nissan, an 18-year-old male, remained at the scene and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
Authorities cordoned off Hylan Boulevard toward Tottenville, extending police tape from the median fence to the sidewalk to secure the area for investigation. A sedan with a shattered passenger-side windshield was visible within the police tape, indicating the severity of the impact.
At this time, no charges have been filed against the driver, and the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident is ongoing.
