St. Louis, MO (January 28, 2025) – A rear-end collision on southbound Interstate 270 near Theiss Rd left one person injured late Monday afternoon. The crash occurred at approximately 5:05 p.m. and involved a 2014 Dodge Avenger and a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe, both traveling eastbound in lane three.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the driver of the Hyundai Santa Fe, a 55-year-old male from Lake St. Louis, slowed down due to congested traffic ahead. The driver of the Dodge Avenger, a 62-year-old female from St. Louis, attempted to brake but was unable to stop in time, causing her vehicle to strike the rear of the Hyundai. The Hyundai sustained moderate damage and was driven from the scene, while the Dodge was totaled and required towing by Miner’s Towing.

The driver of the Dodge Avenger sustained injuries and was transported to Mercy Hospital South for treatment by the Mehlville Fire Protection District. The driver of the Hyundai Santa Fe was reportedly uninjured.

Authorities are continuing their investigation into the incident. Drivers in the area experienced delays as the scene was cleared. We extend our well wishes for a full recovery to the injured individual.

Rear-End Collisions in Missouri

Rear-end collisions are one of the most frequently reported types of traffic accidents in Missouri, often caused by following too closely, distracted driving, or failure to anticipate changes in traffic flow. Interstate highways like I-270, with heavy congestion during peak hours, are particularly prone to such accidents.

Fortunately, the use of seat belts, as seen in this incident, can significantly reduce the severity of injuries. Missouri drivers are encouraged to maintain safe following distances, remain alert to roadway conditions, and adjust their speed to traffic patterns to help prevent rear-end crashes.

Victims of rear-end collisions may face physical injuries, emotional stress, and financial challenges, including medical expenses and vehicle repairs. Navigating insurance claims and other legal matters can also be overwhelming, particularly in cases where injuries are involved.
