St. Louis, MO (January 22, 2025) – A multi-vehicle crash occurred during the morning commute on northbound Interstate 55 at Butler Hill Road, resulting in one person sustaining injuries. The accident was reported at approximately 6:30 a.m. and involved three vehicles.
According to the preliminary investigation, a 2016 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by a 28-year-old female from Pevely, MO, came to a complete stop due to traffic conditions. A 2006 Honda Element, driven by a 29-year-old female from Festus, MO, failed to maintain proper lookout and attempted to change lanes unsafely. In the process, the front of the Honda struck the rear of the Chevrolet. The Honda then collided with a 2024 Kia Sportage, driven by a 42-year-old female from Pevely, MO.
Emergency responders, including the Mehlville Fire Protection District, arrived on the scene and transported the Chevrolet’s driver to Mercy Hospital – South with injuries. Fortunately, the drivers of the Honda and Kia reported no injuries. All three vehicles sustained moderate damage; the Chevrolet and Honda were towed, while the Kia was driven from the scene.
Traffic on I-55 was briefly disrupted as authorities worked to clear the area. The crash remains under investigation by Troop C to determine whether additional factors contributed to the collision.
Rear-End and Lane-Change Accidents in Missouri
Multi-vehicle accidents, such as the one on I-55, are common during peak traffic hours, especially in congested areas like St. Louis. Rear-end collisions and unsafe lane changes are leading causes of crashes on Missouri’s highways. Factors such as distracted driving, failure to maintain proper lookout, and misjudging traffic flow often play a role.
The Missouri Department of Transportation urges drivers to exercise caution, maintain a safe following distance, and avoid sudden lane changes. Defensive driving and adherence to traffic laws are critical in reducing the likelihood of multi-vehicle accidents.
