St. Louis, MO (February 11, 2025) – A multi-vehicle collision on the eastbound I-64 ramp to MO 141 left three drivers injured Monday evening. Emergency responders, including West County Fire and EMS and Monarch Ambulance, quickly arrived at the scene following the crash, which occurred at approximately 6:29 PM.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the incident began when a 2023 Tesla Model 3, driven by a 74-year-old male from Manchester, MO, made an improper left-hand turn and began traveling in the wrong direction. This maneuver led to a series of collisions involving four additional vehicles.

The front right of a 2016 Dodge Challenger, driven by a 31-year-old male from Ballwin, MO, struck the right rear of the Tesla. Subsequently, the Tesla collided head-on with a 2023 Nissan Altima driven by a 21-year-old male from Chesterfield, MO. The impact caused the Altima to spin clockwise, leading it to collide with the front of a 2023 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by a 34-year-old male from Overland, MO, and then the left front of a 2016 Dodge Caravan, driven by a 42-year-old male from St. Louis, MO.

The drivers of the Tesla, Altima, and Malibu all sustained injuries. The Altima driver was transported to Mercy Hospital St. Louis by West County Fire and EMS, while the drivers of the Tesla and Malibu were taken to St. Luke’s Hospital by Monarch Ambulance. The Dodge Challenger and Dodge Caravan drivers were uninjured and were able to drive their vehicles from the scene.

Three vehicles, the Tesla, Altima, and Malibu, were totaled and towed from the scene by McNamara’s Towing. The crash remains under investigation by Trooper B.C. Roberts, with assistance from Master Sgt. D. Bilyeu.

We extend our best wishes to all those injured in this incident and hope for their swift recovery.

Wrong-Way Crashes on Missouri Highways

Wrong-way crashes, like the one that occurred on the I-64 ramp to MO 141 in St. Louis, are among the most dangerous and often result in severe injuries or fatalities. In this incident, a wrong turn by a 74-year-old driver led to a chain reaction involving five vehicles and causing injuries to three individuals.

Wrong-way accidents are particularly hazardous because they frequently involve high-speed, head-on collisions, which can significantly increase the severity of injuries. While wrong-way crashes can result from various factors, including impaired driving, distraction, or confusion, they are often linked to older drivers experiencing cognitive or visual impairments. Missouri’s aging driver population highlights the importance of regular health assessments and evaluations to ensure that seniors are capable of safely navigating complex highway systems.

In addition to driver factors, roadway design can play a role in wrong-way incidents. Clear signage, road markings, and well-lit ramps are critical to preventing drivers from making dangerous maneuvers. The Missouri Department of Transportation continuously works to improve highway safety by implementing measures such as larger “Wrong Way” signs, reflective markers, and rumble strips to alert drivers when they enter a roadway incorrectly.

For those involved in multi-vehicle crashes, the aftermath can be overwhelming. Medical care, vehicle repairs, and dealing with insurance companies add layers of complexity to an already traumatic experience. Understanding your legal rights and accessing support services is essential to ensure a smooth recovery process.
