St. Louis, MO (December 6, 2024) – At approximately 7:33 PM on Thursday, a tragic accident occurred at the intersection of West Florissant and Canfield. A vehicle traveling north on West Florissant in lane 2 struck a pedestrian who was walking in lane 1 of the northbound lanes. The vehicle, a Jeep Grand Cherokee, used lane 1 to pass slower traffic, striking the pedestrian in the process. The vehicle continued northbound on West Florissant, leaving the scene after the collision.

The pedestrian, a 30-year-old male from Ferguson, MO, sustained fatal injuries from the crash. Despite being transported to Christian Hospital Northeast by Christian Hospital EMS, he was pronounced dead at 8:07 PM by Dr. Nagla Abdelmalek. The identity of the driver is unknown, as the vehicle fled the scene.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol, including Corporal J.E. Lacy, Major Crash Investigation Unit #2, Master Sgt. J.D. Cox, Corporal M.W. Hedlund, and Ferguson Police Department, are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time.

Pedestrian Accidents and Hit-and-Run Incidents in Missouri

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers pedestrians face while walking along busy roads. Fatal pedestrian accidents often occur in areas where traffic is moving quickly and the pedestrians may not be visible to drivers, especially in low-light conditions. In this case, the driver’s decision to pass slower traffic in an adjacent lane contributed to the fatal collision.

Hit-and-run incidents, like the one in this case, not only add trauma to an already tragic event but also complicate investigations. Authorities will continue their efforts to locate the driver responsible for the crash and bring justice to the victim’s family.

Pedestrian safety is critical, and both drivers and pedestrians must remain vigilant. Drivers should avoid risky maneuvers, like passing inappropriately, and pedestrians should ensure they walk in safe areas and are visible, especially during evening hours.

If you or someone you know has been affected by a pedestrian accident, it is important to seek the appropriate legal assistance and ensure that justice is served for the victim.
