St. Charles, MO (December 03, 2024) – A crash occurred on southbound US 61 at Route W on December 2, 2024, at approximately 1:40 PM. The incident involved three vehicles and resulted in injuries to a 27-year-old male driver from Foristell, MO. Emergency responders transported him to SSM Health St. Joseph Hospital Lake St. Louis for medical care.
The collision unfolded when the driver of a 2017 Dodge Journey (vehicle #1), who had been stopped at the stop sign on eastbound Route W attempting to cross US 61, attempted to do so when it was unsafe. As a result, the front of the Dodge struck the right side of a 2023 Nissan Sentra (vehicle #2), which was traveling in lane 3 of southbound US 61. The impact caused the Nissan to skid out of control. In an effort to avoid the collision, the driver of a 2016 Ford F150 (vehicle #3) applied the brakes, but the front left of the Ford struck the rear of the Nissan.
Following the impact, both the Ford and the Nissan traveled off the left side of the roadway. The Nissan’s front struck the cable median barrier, while the Ford also struck the median barrier before returning to the roadway. Fortunately, the Ford driver, a 53-year-old male from Moscow Mills, MO, was uninjured and drove his vehicle from the scene. However, the Nissan sustained total damage and was towed from the location, while the Dodge Journey also suffered extensive damage and was towed away by Superior Towing.
The driver of the Nissan was the only individual to sustain injuries in the incident, though his injuries were described as minor. Emergency responders from St. Charles Community Ambulance District attended to the injured driver and ensured his transport to the hospital.
Key Takeaways from the Incident
The crash was caused by a failure to yield when it was unsafe to cross US 61, highlighting the importance of being cautious when crossing high-speed highways. Vehicle #1’s improper maneuvering led to a chain reaction that involved both vehicle #2 and vehicle #3. Thankfully, the injuries were not more severe, and only minor damage occurred to the vehicles involved, despite the extensive skidding and barrier impacts.
The investigation, led by TPR. L.C. Coleman was assisted by D.R. McKenzie. Drivers are urged to approach intersections and high-speed roads with caution to prevent accidents of this nature.
