Springfield, OH (November 8, 2024) – A Springfield Division of Police officer sustained serious injuries in a two-vehicle collision involving a police cruiser late Thursday night. The crash occurred at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Selma Road near York Street, on Springfield’s southeast side.
Officer Terry Hopewell, 36, was driving a 2023 Ford Explorer with lights and sirens activated, responding to an incident southeast on Selma Road. As Officer Hopewell attempted to overtake a 2007 Chevrolet Impala traveling in the same direction, the driver of the Impala reportedly failed to pull over for the emergency vehicle. When the Impala turned left onto York Street, the cruiser collided with it.
The officer sustained serious injuries and was transported to Springfield Regional Medical Center. A passenger in the cruiser, a 24-year-old Springfield man, also sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to the same hospital for treatment.
According to the Springfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Impala driver fled the scene on foot. The driver’s identity remains unknown, and law enforcement is actively investigating.
The circumstances of the emergency call Officer Hopewell was responding to have not yet been disclosed by the Springfield Division of Police. The crash remains under investigation.
