Springfield, IL (January 16, 2025) – Four individuals were taken to a local hospital following a two-vehicle accident at the intersection of Chatham Rd and West Laurel St on Wednesday afternoon. The incident involved a Mitsubishi and a Mercedes, both of which sustained significant damage.
The accident occurred at approximately 4:45 p.m. when the southbound Mitsubishi attempted to turn left onto West Laurel St while a northbound Mercedes traveled through the intersection. Airbags were deployed in both vehicles. According to Leland Grove Deputy Chief Kenton Oliver, all hospital visits were precautionary. No injuries were reported at the scene.
The Mitsubishi was being driven by a mother with her three children, two of whom were transported to the hospital alongside their mother. The driver of the Mercedes, the sole occupant, was also taken to the hospital. Authorities noted that both vehicles were likely totaled due to the extent of the damage. The intersection was partially blocked for about an hour as crews worked to clear the wreckage, with the scene being fully reopened by 5:45 p.m.
The Leland Grove Police Department is leading the investigation to determine fault in the accident, which remains unclear. Springfield Park Police and Jerome Police Department assisted in the response, and officers followed up with the involved parties at the hospital to gather more information.
