Spokane, WA (December 18, 2024) – A tragic accident occurred Wednesday morning on Highway 2 near Airway Heights, resulting in the deaths of two individuals. According to the Washington State Patrol (WSP), the collision was caused by a tree falling onto the highway.
The incident happened when a tree, reportedly located on airport property, fell onto the eastbound lanes of Highway 2. A box truck traveling on the highway struck the fallen tree and subsequently veered off the road. Both occupants of the truck were pronounced dead at the scene. Their identities have not yet been released pending notification of next of kin.
The Washington State Department of Transportation reported that the eastbound side of Highway 2 was completely blocked, while the westbound side was partially impacted. Crews worked diligently to clear the scene, reopening westbound lanes and one eastbound lane by 11 a.m., with the road fully reopened by 11:30 a.m.
Emergency responders, including medics and fire crews, provided assistance at the scene. WSP has initiated an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the tree’s fall and its potential connection to airport property.
