Move Over Laws and Roadside Safety in Pennsylvania
Roadside accidents involving emergency responders, tow truck operators, and other service personnel are an ongoing concern in Pennsylvania and across the country. Pennsylvania’s Move Over Law requires drivers to slow down and, when possible, move into another lane when approaching emergency vehicles, tow trucks, or disabled vehicles with flashing lights. Failure to comply with this law can lead to serious accidents, like the one in Southampton Township, and result in steep fines and penalties.
Tow truck drivers are particularly vulnerable when working on busy highways like Interstate 81, where high speeds and inattentive drivers can create hazardous conditions. Even with proper safety measures, such as hazard lights and reflective clothing, roadside workers face significant risks when drivers do not exercise caution.
Motorists are urged to stay alert, reduce their speed, and change lanes when approaching stopped vehicles on the roadside, especially when those vehicles are part of an emergency response. These simple actions can prevent injuries and save lives.
If you or a loved one has been injured in an accident while performing roadside work or assisting a disabled vehicle, it’s important to seek both medical care and legal guidance to protect your rights and ensure proper compensation.
